The Powers Permaculture Family Farm - An Example of a Permaculture Design

This is what I submitted (minus some details on our exact location) for my certification. I will also post what I get in feedback and the adaptation I make afterward. I'll post both soon hopefully. Without further preamble, here is my Permaculture Design Exercise for my online Permaculture Design Course with Geoff Lawton:

  1. Very cool, thanks for posting! It's too bad you don't own the land, hope you will one day.

We're in the high desert in NW AZ and have gone through many changes. Started after watching Greening the Desert in 2009 when we had one acre with much of it on a hill. Just like you, we also dug three swales -- without A-frame, but still on contour. And then it hardly ever rained and we didn't have mulch. It looks like you don't get much wind - the paper or cardboard you used to mulch wouldn't be there for more than a few days at best around here. I suppose we could hold it done with our ever multiplying rocks, but we got lucky and bought an adjoining acre so we have a lot more level area to garden now.

Like your plant list and we're growing many of these plants, but with temps in the teens every winter and single digit temps every few years, we've been struggling to find perennials. Ordered over 100 berries from Hartmann's this spring and hope to get at least a few established. Tough with 8.2 to 8.7 pH, but we're making progress.

Anyway, I take it you're the Matt Powers selling the permaculture ebooks on Scubbly?

  2. Yes indeed - this was my first attempt at a design for Geoff Lawton's online PDC :)

  3. Thank you for sharing. This is a good example to use as a starting point for creating a plan. Getting my ideas from my mind to more than just a everyday not book has been a bit of a struggle with daily life but this helps.

How much did you accomplish. It looks wonderful. I hope Texas is a wonderful adventure for you and your family.
